New Haven Fire Chief Daniel Coughlin

City of New Haven

New Haven, Conn./WTIC Radio - There's new leadership in the New Haven Fire Department.

On Tuesday, Mayor Justin Elicker swore in Daniel Coughlin as the city's new fire chief.

Coughlin, who had been assistant chief, succeeds former chief John Alston, who has retired.

Coughlin has over 20 years with the NHFD, having joined in 2002.

The new chief worked his way through the ranks as a firefighter, lieutenant, captain, battalion chief and assistant chief of operations.

He will lead a firefighting force that numbers over 300.

“Growing up in New Haven and being a part of a family of firefighters and first responders that have served the Elm City for over a century, I’m extremely honored to be chosen by Mayor Elicker as his nominee for fire chief", Coughlin said in January when he was appointed.

The city's Board of Alders approved Coughlin's appointment at it's meeting Monday night.
