Two people are dead after an apparent murder-suicide at a Cromwell nursing facility.

Cromwell police confirm the shooting happened at about 11 a.m.
Friday at Apple Rehab on Berlin road.

A nursing home official says the victim was an 81-year-old woman, fatally shot in her room by her husband, who then turned the gun on himself.

Police identify the victim as Barbara Brandt, 81, and the shooter as Dennis Brandt, 82.

The woman was a three-year resident of the facility with no roommate—there were no witnesses. Her husband was not a resident.

Apple Rehab says there were no known previous threats. Counseling services are being made available to staff and residents as they try to deal with the deadly incident.

State Public Health Commissioner Dr. Manisha Juthani issued a statement:

"The Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) extends its sympathies to the victims, families, and staff associated with the incident that occurred Friday morning at Apple Rehab Cromwell which is located at 156 Berlin Road. The facility is licensed as an 85-bed Chronic and Convalescent Nursing Home. The DPH Facility Licensing and Investigations Section will continue to monitor the quality of care and services provided at the center to ensure a safe environment.
