HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - The Connecticut Department of Public Health is warning residents to avoid premade ice-cream cups that are linked to a national outbreak of listeriosis.
The Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) has warned residents statewide to avoid the Real Kosher Ice Cream "Soft Serve On The Go" cups, which are linked to a nationwide outbreak of listeriosis, a serious infection most harmful to pregnant women, newborn children, seniors aged 65 or older, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
Real Kosher Ice Cream has voluntarily recalled the soft serve product and is cooperating with the Food and Drug Administration. The ice cream cups can no longer be ordered online via the company's website and are no longer being shipped to individual retailers.
Still, the product has already been distributed to a number of retail stores throughout the state.
State DPH Commissioner Manisha Juthani has warned residents that "although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women."
Commissioner Juthani adds that "Listeriosis can be treated with antibiotics, so anyone who suspects they may have illness should contact their health care provider."
As the F.D.A. conducts its investigation, Connecticut residents are encouraged to look out for ice cream in a "an fl. oz. clear plastic cup" that "looks like a a soft serve cup served in an ice cream store, with a clear plastic cover with a seal and spoon attached to it."
Connecticut has asked that all stores carrying the ice cream cups stop selling them immediately.
State residents who have purchased the "Soft Serve On The Go" cups will have the opportunity to either dispose of the product or return it to their store of purchase.
The state has encouraged that consumers direct their questions to the Soft Serve on the Go team, by calling them at (845) 668-4346.
They will be available Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
