Dangerous heat envelops state

Hartford, Conn./WTIC Radio - Cooling centers are open across the state as a tropical air mass has settled in.

High temperatures are expected to approach or exceed 100 degrees with heat indexes pushing 110 over the next several days.


Governor Lamont earlier this week activated the extreme hot weather protocol.

That runs thru 6:00 p.m. Sunday.

Departments and state agencies are coordinating with United Way 211 to get services to the state's most vulnerable citizens.

People are urged to limit time outdoors if possible, stay hydrated, and limit strenuous activities to early in the day or later on in the evening.

Dr. Justin Cahill, chief of emergency medicine at Bridgeport Hospital, says to be aware of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

"The body temperature tends to get 104 and people will have altered mental status" with heat stroke, said Cahill.

He says that's the time to get that person to the emergency department.
