Avon, Conn./WTIC Radio - The Avon Volunteer Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of its own.
The department says Deputy Chief David Theriault died Thursday from what it says was occupational cancer.
Theriault was a member of the department for 35 years, starting as an explorer at the age of 14.
“Deputy Chief Dave Theriault dedicated his entire life to serving this Department and the Town of Avon,” said AVFD Chief Bruce Appell. “From the time he joined, Dave was a constant presence — reliable, selfless, and deeply committed to the people around him. He led by example, cared fiercely for his fellow firefighters, and gave more than most will ever know. Our department has lost a leader, a mentor, and a friend, and our hearts are with Dave’s family during this incredibly difficult time.”
There's no word yet on arrangements.
