GROTON, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - General Dynamics Electric Boat acquires most of the Crystal Mall in Waterford as the submarine manufacturer looks to expand.

The move comes after EB purchased the former Macy's space in June.

"What this will allow us to do is allow us to pull the administrative functions and consolidate them in this [new] location," said President Mark Rayha during an announcement Thursday morning.

He cited labs, training facilities, and engineering software development as sectors that can be moved from the main site in Groton.

"Reusing mall space and office space is...a challenge for municipal leaders," said Democratic Rep. Joe Courtney (CT-02).

The mall had fallen into financial distress in the last decade.

EB, which plans to have employees in the revitalized space by 2027, says it will work with remaining tenants to figure out next steps.

The acquisition does not include the former Sear's location.
