WILLIMANTIC, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Dr. Elsa M. Nunez, President of Eastern Connecticut State University, announces her retirement.
Nunez began her presidency in 2006 and will remain in that capacity until July 1, 2024.
Dr. Nunez, in an interview with WTIC News/Talk 1080, says one reason she is staying longer is so she can help the University through a difficult budgeting period that appears to be ahead. The Connecticut Colleges and Universities System (CSCU) is bracing for potential cuts in the State 2024-2025 fiscal year budget.
Under her leadership, Eastern has climbed steadily in U.S. News and World Report's annual Best Colleges rankings, and now ranks #19 among 63 public regional institutions in the North Region, an area spanning 11 states and the District of Columbia.
Demonstrating strong fiscal responsibility and management, Dr. Nunez submitted balanced budgets for 18 consecutive years and built the University's reserves from $0 in 2006 to $32 million today.
Eastern's 184-acre campus continued to evolve during Dr. Nunez's presidency, with new construction including an expanded and remodeled Student Center, a 174,000-square foot Science Building in 2008, and a 118,000-square foot Fine Arts Instructional Center in 2016. The University also reopened a modernized Communication Building in 2019.
“Elsa Núñez will leave a strong legacy at Eastern Connecticut State University, having served with distinction for 18 years,” CSCU President Cheng said. He says further:
“Under her able leadership, the university has grown stronger, cementing itself as the state’s public liberal arts institution. She has also been an invaluable asset to the system in her role as vice president for universities. On a personal note, I have appreciated her guidance, expertise, and support over the past two years. While her retirement is certainly well-deserved, I am sad to see her go, and I know that she will continue to touch lives in whatever the next chapter holds for her.”
A search committee is expected to begin its work in replacing Dr. Nunez this fall.
