New Haven, Conn./WTIC Radio - Activity among West Nile virus carrying mosquitoes is beginning to ramp up across Connecticut.

According to the New Haven-based Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, disease carrying mosquitoes have been detected in nearly two dozen cities and towns.

Those municipalities include Branford, Bridgeport, Cheshire, Danbury, Darien, East Haven, Fairfield, Greenwich, Manchester, Meriden, Milford, Montville, New Britain, New Haven, North Branford, North Haven, Norwalk, South Windsor, Stamford, Stratford, West Haven, Westport.

John Shepard, CAES medical entomologist, says “West Nile virus is spreading to additional towns across Connecticut with highest levels of virus activity in mosquitoes from Fairfield and New Haven counties.”

“Now is the time to take precautions against mosquito bites,” said Dr. Philip Armstrong, Chief Scientist at CAES. "We encourage everyone to protect themselves by using insect repellent and covering exposed skin, especially during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active."

Those who plan to spend anytime outdoors should limit activity in the early morning and evening hours when mosquitoes are most active.

Also, use insect repellent, wear long clothing and remove any standing water around the home that can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

No human cases of West Nile virus have been reported.
