Berlin, Conn./WTIC Radio - Eversource has notified state regulators of its intent to seek a rate increase.

The utility sent a letter to PURA, the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority, that the request is for 11% for all customer classes and 13% for residential customers.

The utility is reporting a roughly $500 million base rate deficiency, not including storm costs, in its request.

PURA will have 350 days upon receipt of the Eversource notification to act on the request.

If approved, the increases would take effect July 1st of next year.

State Attorney General William Tong criticized the request, saying "Connecticut families are being crushed by unaffordable energy costs."

But state Senate Minority Leader Stephen Harding noted that just a few weeks ago, senate Democrats voted no on legislation that would have lowered energy costs.
