Fairfield Republican state Senator Tony Hwang announces he'll be leaving his position.
Senator Hwang, 61, has held his seat for five terms, calling it "...one of the greatest honors and privileges..." of his life, in an announcement Tuesday.
In his letter, Senator Hwang referred to himself as "a proud Republican" who advocated for fiscal accountability. The Senator also noted that, in an era of "emotional and political polarization," he "...remained committed to respectful engagement and collaborative problem-solving..." and "...chose not to engage in personal attacks."
Senate Minority Leader Stephen Harding released a statement on Hwang's decision:
“Tony Hwang has lived the American Dream. Tony loves America and he loves Connecticut. His dedication to the people of his district is second to none, as is his work ethic. He put people before politics. He worked in bipartisan fashion. After nearly 18 years in the state legislature, he is starting a new chapter. His public service has had a positive impact on so many lives, and I know Tony will continue to find ways to serve his community and give back. I am proud to call Tony my friend, I have learned much from him, and I look forward to serving with Tony in the months ahead as he finishes out his term.”
Senator Hwang says he plans to spend more time with his family, return to his real estate profession, and mentor young leaders about "constructive participation" in government, politics, and civil life.
