Final report released on fatal Bristol police shootings

Hartford, Conn./WTIC Radio - The state inspector general has released a final report on the shootings that killed two Bristol police officers, left another wounded and the suspect in those shootings dead.

The report says Officer Alec Iurato was justified in using deadly force to take down the suspect on the evening of October 12, 2022.

Lieutenant Dustin Demonte and Sergeant Alex Hamzy were shot to death in an ambush shooting that night by Nicholas Brutcher.

The report says the evening began with a bar fight involving Brutcher and his brother, followed by a traffic stop and finally a 911 call.

Investigators say the suspect lured the officers with that 911 call to the his home on Redstone Hill Road before ambushing them.

Demonte and Hamzy were fatally wounded.

Iurato, himself wounded, returned fire, killing Brutcher.

The report says Brutcher began to spiral following his divorce, drinking more and using antidepressants.
