Hartford, Conn./WTIC Radio - The state Department of Public Health is reporting the first human case of West Nile virus this season.
DPH says the patient is a male in his 40s from Fairfield County.
He became ill during the third week of August, was hospitalized, but has since recovered.
Tests confirmed the presence of antibodies to the mosquito-borne virus.
There were 12 total human cases of WNV in Connecticut in 2024.
“As we gather with family, friends, and neighbors outdoors for the remainder of this
summer and into the fall, protecting yourself from mosquito bites is an important step in
reducing the risk of West Nile virus infection,” said DPH Commissioner Manisha
Juthani, MD.
The virus has been detected in mosquitoes trapped in nearly three dozen cities and towns this year.
Health experts continue to advise the public to take precautions when outside at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
That includes wearing long clothing and using repellent.
Also, remove standing water around the home and fix any broken windows or screens.
