Farmington, Conn./WTIC Radio - Health experts in Connecticut are monitoring influenza activity in nearby states.

Respiratory viruses, in general, are on the rise.

In New York, there was an 80% increase in illnesses for the week ending November 29 when compared to the week prior.

Experts say it stands to reason that Connecticut's numbers are on the rise.

That's typical during the holidays, says Dr. David Banach at UConn Health.

He says there are ways to take precautions, in addition to getting a flu shot.

Banach advises getting a flu shot now since it takes about two weeks to kick in.

In addition, wash hands frequently, clean surfaces regularly and if you are sick, stay home so as not to infect others.
