Former Hartford mayor Uccello dead at 100

Hartford, Conn./WTIC Radio - A pioneer in Connecticut politics is being mourned and remembered as a trailblazer.

Word came today that former Hartford Mayor Ann Uccello has died.

Uccello was the first woman elected mayor of a city in Connecticut in 1967, at a time when few women were in politics.

Prior to that Uccello was elected to the Hartford City Council in 1963.

The Republican went on to serve in the administrations of former presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter.

In a statement, Governor Lamont said “Ann Uccello was a trailblazer who was born and raised in Hartford and dedicated her career in public service to the city she loved."

Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz said “today Connecticut mourns the passing of a remarkable woman. Ann Uccello made history as the first woman to serve as mayor of a capital city, shattering glass ceilings and commanding attention not just here, but across the globe."

Ann Uccello was 100.
