Glastonbury, Conn./WTIC Radio - Police in Glastonbury have charged a Virginia man with animal cruelty following a video that circulated on social media that appears to show him violently assaulting a dog.
Under arrest is Michael Gerchy of Lancaster, Virginia.
Glastonbury police say they first became aware of the video March 12.
It purports to show Gerchy assaulting one of his dogs at a residence in town.
Investigators say they worked with out-of-state law enforcement to track down Gerchy and assess the welfare of the dogs, which are currently out of the jurisdiction of Glastonbury police.
They say the viral video received worldwide attention and the department was overwhelmed with calls and emails.
Police also say erroneous information also circulated that the suspect was affiliated with local police, which they stress is not the case.
Gerchy faces counts of animal cruelty and violation of a protective order.
Bond was set at $250,000.
