That said, state leaders have provided an update on masks and testing for public schools.

Josh Geballe, state's chief operating officer, says more test kits have been sent to public school systems.

He says 620,000 tests have gone out to schools and staff.

Geballe says additionally, another 50,000 are headed to child care providers.

State education commissioner Charlene Russell-Tucker says even with the increase in cases, they are committed to keeping schools open for in person learning.

Russell-Tucker says schools provide important "support measures" for students during the pandemic including nutrition, mental health and physical activity.

The education commissioner says schools will have to make up any remote learning days, barring any changes in the state law mandating 180 days of instruction.
