An innocent Groton woman is in intensive care after being shot through the floor of her apartment late Sunday night.
Town of Groton police say Caleb Bean, 30, was handling his AR-15 inside the Phoenix Apartments on Long Hill Rd. when a shot went off. Bean tells police the rifle fired accidentally.
The bullet went through Bean’s ceiling, striking his upstairs neighbor in the leg. Police say she lost a significant amount of blood as her boyfriend and others tried to stop the bleeding with a tourniquet.
The victim was brought to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London with life-threatening injuries.
Bean was arraigned Monday on a series of charges, including assault, reckless endangerment and unlawful discharge of a firearm.
