HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio)_ Legendary Hartford-based defense attorney Hubert Santos, known for taking controversial cases over decades, has died.

Santos passed away Monday at the age of 76.

Some of Connecticut's most prominent cases involved Santos, including the case of Kennedy-cousin Michael Skakel in the 1975 death of Martha Moxley, to former Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez who was convicted on corruption charges.

His law partner of eight years, Trent LaLima, tells WTIC News he feels the legal community in Connecticut will remember Santos as a teacher: "...they learned his style...they learned you need to continue to fight for your client...they learned they need to go big..."

LaLima says, "I'll remember that he was extremely generous in helping young lawyers and wanting to mentor people and see people be better."

Santos founded his law firm in 1974. He graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1969.
