Hartford detective reassigned over proposed homicide wager

Police

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio)_ The Hartford Police Department is condemning a proposed wager over where the first homicide of 2021 would occur.

In a statement posted to Facebook, Police Chief Jason Thody says that while no wager took place, he has reviewed the text message and finds no ambiguity about the situation.

An officer sent a group text to other officer and court officials, earlier this week, proposing a wager on where the first homicide of 2021 would occur.

"...This represents an appalling lack of judgement, an extreme insensitivity toward our community, and a clear violation of department policy...," says Chief Thody.

The detective has been reassigned out of Major Crimes as of Friday evening. Chief Thody says he will be charged with violating the code of conduct.

It's not clear, at this time, what discipline may be imposed.

Chief Thody finishes his statement, saying this incident comes "at a time when we are trying to build trust, I am as disappointed in this behavior as I am sure you all of you are."
