CHARLTON, Mass. (WTIC and AP) — A Connecticut man who got out of his disabled car on the Massachusetts Turnpike was struck and killed by a passing tractor-trailer, Massachusetts State Police say.

The 33-year-old Hartford resident was struck at about 11:20 p.m. Tuesday on the eastbound side of the highway in Charlton, according to a statement from spokesperson David Procopio.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the car was in the breakdown lane when the driver exited the vehicle. He was standing to the left of the car with the driver’s door opened into the right travel lane when the tractor-trailer struck the driver and the open door, the statement said.

The car's passenger, a 35-year-old Hartford man, was not injured.

No names were released.

The truck driver, a 47-year-old Connecticut man, pulled over immediately and was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.
