HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Leadership at Hartford Public Schools will start looking different by the end of the school year.

Doctor Leslie Torres-Rodriguez is stepping down as superintendent at the end of the current academic year, even though her contract was extended to continue through June of next year.

She's faced tough criticism in recent years over a $77-million+ budget deficit and challenges recruiting and retaining staff, while also fielding the threat of having to cut nearly 400 positions district-wide.

Still, city officials, like Mayor Arunan Arulampalam, are thanking her for her leadership.

In a written statement, Doctor Torres-Rodriguez thanks who she's calling her "incredible team ... who remained steadfast in their commitment to all students."

She started as assistant superintendent of instructional leadership in 2015 and has served as superintendent since 2017.

There's no word on how a search to find her replacement will look.
