A Department of Correction healthcare employee was assaulted at the New Haven Correctional Center on Monday in an incident that also left two correctional officers injured.
The department says the inmate had just finished a medical evaluation around 11:35 a.m. when he ran toward the healthcare worker and struck him in the back of the head. The worker then fell to the ground.
Responding correctional staff were able to move in quickly, secure him, and remove him from the area.
The healthcare worker was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.
Two correctional officers, who responded to the incident, were also injured and taken to an area health clinic for treatment.
“It is deeply upsetting when an employee is subject to violence while carrying out their duties, particularly an employee whose role is to provide care to those in our custody,” said Interim Commissioner Sharonda Carlos, who added: “I am grateful for the compassion, courage, and professionalism our healthcare and correctional staff exemplify, and I will continue to do everything in my power to ensure their safety.”
The Connecticut State Police are investigating.
