Hartford, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Rain moved in as temperatures hovered at or below freezing this morning, making for a treacherous commute.
Many school districts that had initially delayed openings decided to cancel classes altogether today, as nearly every major interstate in Connecticut saw crashes of varying degrees of severity.
State Department of Transportation Commissioner Joe Giulietti said crews were in position at midnight.
"The issue I would call unique for us this time is if the storm comes in as rain, pre-treatment washes off", Giulietti said.
The commissioner also said adding to the problems were incidents of motorists getting out of their vehicles following a crash, then falling on the slippery road conditions.
State Police Trooper First Class Sarah Salerno said if you become involved in a collision, stay in your vehicle for safety.
Temperatures are expected to rise into the 40s by later this afternoon.
