Manchester, Conn. (WTIC) - The Town of Manchester's Board of Directors has voted unanimously to celebrate Juneteenth as a permanent holiday, viewed as an end to slavery when U-S Soldiers entered Galveston Texas in 1865.
The vote was unanimous.
"We haven't decided what to do to for the celebrations. We will put together a planning committee to decide what they are," said Manchester Mayor Jay Moran.
Adding the town's 14th holiday will have to be finalized with the town's bargaining units.
"It's a long-overdue holiday and well-deserved for a good portion of the community who wants to celebrate. We hope the entire community joins us. The focus will be we are proud to recognize this holiday and we'll do our best to use taxpayers' money correctly."
Moran says he believes plans will be finalized to celebrate the holiday in June of next year.
