Waterbury, Conn./WTIC Radio - In Waterbury, an investigation is underway after police say two female students were assaulted by four other females this month at Wallace Middle School.

The attack took place March 3, police said.

The victims, twin girls, reported they were bullied and harassed by four seventh-graders.

One 12-year-old was found to have initiated the physical altercation.

Those involved in the assault have been disciplined, said police.

The victims sustained minor injuries.

According to family members of the victims, they were singled out because of their religious beliefs.

Police are continuing to investigate that aspect of the case.

“I am very concerned about the allegations concerning the part religion may have played in this incident", said Mayor Paul Pernerewski.

Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo said "the Waterbury Police Department takes these claims very seriously and is conducting a thorough
investigation in partnership with the City of Waterbury Education Department."
