Naugatuck family responds to racist incident

Naugatuck

Borough of Naugatuck

NAUGATUCK, Conn. (WTIC Radio)_ Fallout continues as a prominent Naugatuck family responds to allegations their daughter made racist comments two years ago.

Naugatuck Police Chief Steven Hunt and his wife Johnna Hunt, Naugatuck High School Associate Principal, are apologizing in an open letter to the community after comments surfaced on Friday of their daughter allegedly making racist comments when she was 13.

"We cannot soothe or erase the pain caused by the words and images seen by many," the open letter reads in part. "On behalf of our family, we sincerely apologize to all those who were hurt by this. We are left, however, as parents of a scared, regretful child who has and will continue to suffer the consequences of her poor and inexcusable actions."

As heated comments grow on social media, Naugatuck High School is preparing for what they are calling a period of healing in the coming weeks.

NHS is planning to make special classrooms and spaces available for students in need of reflection, allies, or other counseling.

NHS Principal John Harris has addressed the matter in a letter to the community, which can be read at the following link.

It is unclear whether Associate Principal Hunt or her daughter will be in attendance Monday or Tuesday.

Two separate investigations are underway in both the Police Department and the Board of Education.

Officials did not comment on specifics of the alleged comments.
