NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Some students in the New Haven Public Schools system may have compromised their personal information in a phishing attack on the district reported Wednesday.

The District, in a letter to the community Wednesday, says four compromised student email accounts were used to send out as many as 10,000 emails to other students, at once, seeking personal banking information.

About half of the students actually received at least one of the emails.

About 10% of those emails were opened and read.

The District says it cannot know, for certain, how many students actually filled out the bogus forms. But, the District is aware that some some students have come forward to report they have filled out the forms that could put them and their families at "immediate financial risk," according to the District's statement.

New Haven Public Schools calls the attack "sophisticated."

Now, the IT Department is working to scrub the emails from the system and to secure compromised accounts.
