Naugatuck, Conn./WTIC Radio - A Naugatuck police officer is off the job for now, as the department investigates a use of force incident.

Officer Nicholas Kehoss is on leave pending the outcome of a Naugatuck police department investigation, as well as one from state police.

It stems from an incident on October 14th, in which 33-year-old Jarell Day was accused of shoplifting at a local supermarket.

In body cam footage released Monday, the suspect is hit with the taser three times, including once when he was down on the ground.

This came after a pursuit in which a police vehicle was hit and a struggle with store staff beforehand.

Naugatuck police chief Colin McAllister says a shoplifting was ultimately classified as a robbery.

"There was no weapon involved but there was a struggle which was through force.  That's generally the parameters for robbery", said the chief.

The Waterbury state's attorney handed the case to state police for a criminal probe into the officer's actions.

Day is facing a host of charges including interfering, robbery and criminal attempt at assault.
