SEYMOUR, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments says a report into the Coe Pond Dam in Seymour finds the structure threatens public safety in its "poor condition."

The discovery came during the ongoing Kinneytown Dam removal project.

An inspection of Coe Pond Dam, conducted by Gomez and Sullivan Engineers, was wrapped up on March 6, 2024. The Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments reviewed the report and is now alerting the public of the threat.

The report states in no uncertain terms that Coe Pond Dam is an imminent public safety threat and calls into doubt its structural integrity.

A breach would pose a particular concern to the Metro North Rail Line, as well as residents down river.

The NVCOG is calling on the owner of the dam, Kinneytown Electric, to mitigate the threat by lowering the water as soon as possible. The State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is aware of the threat and has emergency authority over the dam, if necessary.

This latest warning comes after the Fitchvillle Pond Dam in Bozrah sprung a leak in January and resulted in significant flooding in the Bozrah-Norwich area.
