HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - The Secretary of the State's Office is encouraging turnout for today's primary election, which is typically less than half what it is for presidential elections - even though it might impact residents more.

Six candidates are trying to win the Democratic nomination for Mayor of Hamden. Mayor Lauren Garrett withdrew from the race this summer.

Two slates of candidates will compete for town council seats in Bloomfield, before the council itself chooses a new mayor. Former Whalers National Anthem singer Tony Harrington is Mayor for now after Danielle Wong resigned before her term was up.

Republicans will choose their candidate for First Selectman in Oxford between incumbent George Temple and challenger Jeffrey Luff.

New Haven Democrats will choose their candidates for the Board of Alders in three wards.

Norwalk democrats will choose a candidate for mayor from between Barbara Smyth and Darlene Young.

Current mayor Harry Rilling is not running for reelection.
