POMFRET, Conn. (WTIC Radio)_ DEEP officials have identified the kayaker found dead Sunday evening in Pomfret.

EnCon police responded Sunday evening to the Pomfret section of the Quinebaug River on the report of a missing kayaker.

A submerged kayak with no occupant was found in the Quinebaug River.

Michael Lowell, 58, of Putnam, was found later without a life jacket. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

State law mandates that through May 30th, a life jacket must be worn if operating a paddlecraft.

DEEP continues to advise people getting on the water to wear a life jacket any time of the year.
