New changes to Connecticut's Red Flag laws.

Tightening loopholes in Red Flag laws will make a difference
Steve Stafstrom
CT General Assembly

Hartford, Conn. (WTIC Radio)-Changes have occurred in Connecticut's Red Flag laws, regarding the obtaining of risk warrants for the temporary removal of firearms for those considered dangerous to themselves or others.

The changes that took effect Wednesday, include allowing families or medical professionals to petition for a risk warrant. Previously that was only allowed by the state's attorney or two police officers.

Further the law ensures individual whose firearms are removed, can't acquire new firearms and ammunition.

Connecticut's Red Flag laws, considered a model for the nation to follow, came into effect following the deadly Connecticut Lottery shooting in 1998.

Bridgeport State Representative Steve Stafstrom, who co-chairs the Judiciary Committee, said tightening the loopholes will make a difference and possibly save lives.
