New Haven, Conn./WTIC Radio - The state inspector general has released a preliminary report on an officer involved shooting last Wednesday that left a suspect dead.

The report says officers arrived at a New Haven apartment on Grand Avenue around 5:30 a.m. to execute a search and seizure warrant.

The suspect identified as Aaron Freeman, 35, opened fire, wounding West Haven Officer Robert Rappa in the leg.

Waterbury Officer Martin Scanlon, working with the DEA, exchanged fire with Freeman, the report says.

Scanlon took cover behind a stairwell.

Later, West Haven Sergeant Joseph Riehl, wearing safety shields, entered the apartment.

Riehl was fired on through a bedroom wall and returned fire, the report says, sustaining a leg wound.

Police later found a firearm near Freeman's body.

Freeman died from wounds to the torso and extremities. His death has been ruled a homicide.

The investigation is ongoing.
