State Police launch probe into New Britain tax office

New Britain, Conn./WTIC Radio - An investigation is underway from Connecticut State Police into alleged mismanagement in the New Britain tax collector's office.

Mayor Bobby Sanchez confirmed a probe was underway in a statement released Saturday.

“The opening of a Connecticut State Police investigation underscores the seriousness of what was uncovered in this report. These are significant allegations involving the public trust, and they deserve a full and independent review. We will continue to cooperate fully with any State Police investigation", Sanchez said.

Allegations of irregularities came to light over the winter when former city revenue collector Cheryl Blogoslawski was placed on administrative leave.

She was subsequently fired this month.

An independent review from a Hartford law firm found that checks for tax payments were backdated for Blogoslawski and others and that computer records falsified under the direction of the previous Mayor's Office.

Erin Stewart, now a Republican candidate for governor, was mayor at the time.

Stewart has said she never directed anyone to do anything nefarious, blaming Democrats for what she called a "witch hunt".
