STORRS, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Concerns over potential serious flooding on the Storrs campus prompted the UConn Board of Trustees to approve a $30-million redesign of the Mirror Lake Dam.
The dam has not been dredged since 1946. A recent study placed it in the C category as hazardous.
According to UConn Chief Architect Laura Cruikshank, the C category means it has the potential for loss of life and creating serious property damage.
"What we've observed at 2 A.M. during rain events are the culverts under 195 almost overtopping. That's where if something blocked those two culverts we could have a serious issue on the highway and that's where the risk comes in," she said.
