Suspect in East Hartford cold case murder dead in prison

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - The man arrested in connection with a cold case in East Hartford has been found dead in his prison cell.

George Legere, 77, was found unresponsive in his prison cell at MacDougal-Walker Correctional Institute on Friday night around 11 p.m.

Attempts were made at the prison to save his life but he later died at a medical facility.

He was suspected in the 1973 murder of 21-year-old Janet Couture in East Hartford. She was stabbed to death at her home on Cannon Road.

He was serving a sentencing in another crime.

Connecticut State Police are investigating the incident, which has been described as an untimely death.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy.
