New Haven, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - After a slow start, fall tick season has begun to heat up.

Dr. Kirby Stafford at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in New Haven said they can't say why specifically, but activity has been picking up with the Lyme disease-carrying deer tick.

The station is also tracking the Asian long horn and Lone Star ticks, he said.

Unlike mosquitoes that die off at the first hint of cold, Stafford said ticks can lay low in the winter then come back briefly if there are mild temperatures.

If you happen to be out, he recommends you use repellent and when you get in, do a tick check on yourself and any pets, as well.
