SALEM, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - A volunteer firefighter is dead after he was struck by a minivan Sunday evening in Salem.
State Police say Willis Sands, 69, of Bronx, New York, was leaving a Trunk or Treat event at the Gardner Lake Volunteer Fire Company in Salem, where he was a member.
There were no streetlights and no crosswalks at the intersection of Old Colchester Road and Witter Road, where a minivan struck and killed Sands.
No one inside the minivan was injured.
The driver of the minivan was taken to Backus Hospital in Norwich for an evaluation.
