Waterbury, Conn./WTIC Radio - Water rates could go up in Waterbury.
Mayor Paul Pernerewski says the current rate structure is not sufficient to generate revenue to cover increasing costs.
Under the proposal, the usage rate would increase from $2.65 per centum cubic feet to $3.50/CCF.
The proposed changes would mean an average annual increase of $130 per household.
“I do not take any increase lightly, and I recognize the burden this may place on many households,” Pernerewski said. “This proposal was evaluated thoughtfully and responsibly, balancing affordability with the long term needs of our city’s water system."
Last December, a water line break led to the breach of a larger transmission main that left virtually all of the city without water.
And last month, former city Water Department superintendent Brad Malay was arrested on forgery charges.
He's accused of lying about his qualifications prior to his hiring.
