Waterbury schools return to full-day learning

WATERBURY, Conn. (WTIC Radio)_ Waterbury Public Schools are transitioning to full-day learning.

Students will have the option to attend full-day, in-person learning starting on Monday, March 15, 2021. Wednesday will be reserved as a weekly half-day.

About 24% of students are currently in the school's hybrid learning program. Superintendent Dr. Verna Ruffin says, at this time, there is no indication more than that amount of students will want to attend full-day, in-person classes. But, the district has sent out a survey to families and is awaiting further responses.

Dr. Ruffin cites growing confidence with the increasingly more available amount of vaccines available to the community, including K-12 school teachers and staff.

Challenges include more time for cleaning during the school day. More breaks must also be factored into the day for students, including mask breaks and hand washing.

The district has not offered a full-day of learning since pre-pandemic March of 2020.
