Wrong way driver intercepted in Waterbury

Waterbury, Conn./WTIC Radio - State police say one of its troopers was able to intercept a wrong way driver early Tuesday morning along Route 8 in Waterbury.

Just after 1:00 a.m., police say the vehicle was headed southbound in the northbound lanes near exit 36.

A trooper working a constrcution detail nearby responded to the scene before the Toyota Prius collided with the trooper's cruiser.

No injuries were reported but state police say the elderly driver appeared disoriented and was transported to an area hospital for evaluation.

Troopers are reminding residents to evaluate the driving capabilities of loved ones in poor physical health, showing signs of visual impairment, or demonstrating slowed reaction times.

The operator was cited for driving the wrong way on a divided highway.
