Man charged in Hartford carjacking

(Hartford, Conn./WTIC) - Hartford Police are crediting citizens with assisting them in collaring a suspect in a violent carjacking Sunday night.

Officers responded just after 10:00 p.m. to a gas station at the corner of New Park Avenue and Park Street.

Detective say the suspect, 26-year-old Aaron Rugar of Torrington, asked a vehicle owner and her boyfriend to borrow a tire iron.

Police say as the couple were looking for the tire iron, Rugar jumped into the car's driver's seat.

The owner grabbed on to the suspect, her boyfriend in the passenger seat as Rugar attempted to drive off, police say.

She was then pushed off by the suspect and dragged several feet according to police, before the car crashed into an unoccupied vehicle.

Police say Rugar attempted to make a run for it before he was detained by citizens in the area.

He's being held on $200,000 bond, facing carjacking, larceny, assault, and other offenses.

The victims were taken to Hartford Hospital for treatment of various injuries, according to police.
