While we may be entering the season of giving, a recent poll has found that Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales aren’t just for gifts, as 64% of consumers plan to get something for themselves too.
The Shopify-Gallup survey looked to learn more from consumers on how they plan to spend their money this holiday season amidst a hectic economy.
In total, 71% of shoppers under the age of 50 said they plan on buying for themselves or their household this sale season, compared to 55% of shoppers 50 and older.
As for what they plan on buying, around a third (34%) said they will most likely stock up on everyday products, including cleaning supplies, home improvement items, beauty products, and baby items during the sales.
Another 13% said they plan on “only buying for themselves and their household and not buying any gifts at all,” the pollsters shared.
As for who will be shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Gallup shared that overall, younger shoppers were more likely to take advantage of the sales.
The results also showed a growing trend among shoppers, as Cyber Monday is expected to be bigger than Black Friday once again, with 61% saying they plan to buy something on Monday, compared to 41% on Friday.
The top categories that consumers plan on buying from this holiday season are apparel and accessories and gift cards, with roughly 60% choosing each.
Another 45% say they will buy children’s toys, 33% say they’ll buy electronics and health and beauty products, 20% plan on getting kitchen appliances and cookware, and 14% say they’ll pick up sports equipment.
While shoppers are planning on shelling out this holiday season, it’s not the same as last year, with the National Retail Federation only forecasting holiday sales to rise 3% to 4% for November through December, below last year’s 5.4% growth.
The NRF survey reported that consumers were planning to spend $875 on average on gifts, food, decorations, and other seasonal items. That number is $42 more than last year.
The survey included responses from 1,771 U.S. adults.
