A Georgia man is facing charges after allegedly attacking his pregnant girlfriend, who got help from a convenience store clerk.

Police say the couple was arguing in their vehicle when things turned physical.

"The altercation began because he accused her of infidelity," Will Pierce, investigator with the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office, told The Moultrie Observer. "It started at the house, but at some point they got in the car and started driving around, continuing to verbally fight."

At one point, the man pulled over, "forcibly removed" his 14-week pregnant girlfriend from the vehicle and used a cell phone to repeatedly beat the woman on the head, Pierce said. He then drove away, leaving her bleeding on the side of the road for about 10 minutes before he went back.

When he finally did return, the woman convinced him to take her to a convenience store where she was able to get assistance.

"She had gone up to the clerk with a black eye and several lacerations on her face asking for them to call 911," Pierce told The Observer. "The employee hid her in the manager's office and watched the boyfriend wander around the inside and outside of the store looking for her until authorities arrived."

The unborn child appeared to be unharmed by the incident, Pierce added.

The 23-year-old suspect, who was not named, was arrested on charges of kidnapping, criminal trespass and aggravated assault.
