A Houston-area woman went viral this summer as she posted photos of herself pulling a loaf of bread out of her mailbox.
As it turns out, the photos were staged. However, the whole saga got the “Something Offbeat” team wondering – what could we cook outside as record-breaking temperatures continue to be reported across the globe this summer?
While bread in the mailbox might be a long shot, what about frying an egg on the sidewalk, baking cookies in a hot car, or grilling a grilled-cheese sandwich on the blacktop?
“I think your cheese would melt. I’m not sure about the toasting of your bread…” said chair of the Department of Geography and Meteorology at Valparaiso University, Dr. Teresa M. Balz-Elsholz. “You wouldn’t even need to put it in the sidewalk. Leave it in a plastic bag, and you’d be fine. Crispiness – not so much.”
