Lance Reddick, an actor who made a career out of playing stone-faced men of authority, died “suddenly” Friday morning, according to his publicist Mia Hansen.
Reddick’s death was first reported by TMZ. He was 60.
The actor had become instantly recognizable to fans of action and drama, thanks to his key roles in television series like “Fringe,” “Lost” and “The Wire” and on the big screen in the “John Wick” film franchise.
However, despite his renown for playing icy cold customers, Reddick was remembered by coworkers in the wake of his passing for his warm demeanor.
Director James Gunn tweeted that Reddick was “an incredibly nice guy, and an incredibly talented actor.”
“A man of great strength and grace. As talented a musician as he was an actor. The epitome of class,” Reddick’s “Wire” costar Wendell Pierce tweeted.
Speaking on his own career, Reddick himself told the Los Angeles Times in 2009, “I’m an artist at heart. I feel that I’m very good at what I do. When I went to drama school, I knew I was at least as talented as other students, but because I was a Black man and I wasn’t pretty, I knew I would have to work my butt off to be the best that I would be, and to be noticed.”
Reddick already had a number of high-profile performances waiting in the wings to be released, including “John Wick 4” later this month.
His publicist attributed his death to natural causes.
