PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man was killed Monday in a drive-by shooting at a very busy intersection during rush hour in West Philly. A woman, who saw the whole thing play out in front of her like a scene from television, described the incident.
She was driving a car full of kids home from school when she says she saw the shooting unfold.
"There was a sedan, a gray sedan right in front of me. And the lane right next to me had a van that was gray, and five hands with black guns were shooting at the sedan. And it was a very, very close range shooting," she said.
The victim in this case, according to police, is 22-year-old Jamel Williams of West Philadelphia. Police say he was shot five times at about 4 p.m. while driving a Ford Fusion in the area of Belmont Avenue and Montgomery Drive.
"It really was what you think of a classic drive-by shooting. That’s what it looked like," she said.
The witness says after the shots were fired, the victim inside veered off the road. She stopped, traffic stopped, and a group of people she estimated to be between 15 and 20 years old emptied out of the van and got away. She then called police.
This was just a trip home for her after picking up children from school, but it is also another incident in a city where at least 407 people have been killed this year. And as in many of those cases, no one was arrested for this shooting, so police are looking for information.
