ST. CLAIR SHORES (WWJ) -- An investigation is underway in Macomb County following allegations of voter fraud.
Macomb County Clerk Anthony Forlini says the alleged double voting by four people was uncovered by St. Clair Shores Clerk Abby Barrett.
After Forlini's office was informed, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido were notified.
It's believed these voters cast absentee ballots and then also voted in person in the state's primary election on August 6.
"We take this very seriously," Forlini said in a statement published by the Detroit News on Friday "Voting twice is a felony. And if they knowingly did that, I expect the full length of the law to apply."
Forlini, a Republican, said the double voting wasn't "widespread fraud," and he believed the election administration software had warned local poll workers the individuals had already cast ballots.
WWJ's Jonathan Carlson reports Benson has contacted Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's Office, which is now investigating the allegations.
About 21% of Macomb County's 726,541 registered voters participated in the primary, according to the unofficial results.
