(Hartford, Conn. WTIC)-Connecticut's seven electors meet Monday to reaffirm November's election results, declaring Joe Biden President and Kamala Harris Vice President.
The event happens at noon in the state capitol Senate Chambers. Secretary of the State Denise Merrill says it includes a Color Guard, historian, several speakers, music and "pomp and ceremony."
Merrill says only the ones that need to be there will attend, enforcing Covid precautions.
Connecticut has seven electors, five representing the Congressional districts and two for the Senate.
Supporters contend the Electoral College is crucial to preserve the role of the states in elections. Opponents argue it is a less democratic body, in that it violates the principal of one person one vote.
Merrill says the electoral college it could disappear unless it finds a way to adjust for modern times. "Connecticut has joined 13 other states already who say they'll cast their electoral votes for whoever wins the popular vote. Which means when it gets to the 270 vote threshold--the number you need to win--that kicks in and technically goes around the electoral college."
The Electoral College was created in 1804 with adoption of the 12th Amendment to the Constitution.
