(Hartford, Conn.WTIC)- A legislative Committe heard testimony on a proposal to charge a "mansion tax"on properties to make taxes more equitable and to help poorer communities saddled with high mill rates.
Senate President Martin Looney's proposal is for a one-percent mill assessed on commercial and residential real estate valued at more than 430-thousand dollars.
Opponents argue Connecticut tax payers already shoulder their fair share and another tax will drive residents from the state.
Advocates argue the big cities offer services to a wider audience and other means of revenue can augment overburdened budgets.
The measure is before the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee.
